On the Mac I use Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper Cloner and the cloning function in Tech Tool Pro. Over the years, I have had times when an OS volume failed to clone with CCC and SuperDuper so that's why i keep several options available. I have not yet cloned anything under windows. I just keep a backup drive.

The OS volume should have plenty of room to allow the OS to efficiently move files around as needed. If you cram the OS clone volume on an almost full drive, you risk a slowdown of any caching or other file maintenance functions.

In the past some programs have required re-authorization after switching to a clone and if I recall correctly, it was usually Adobe programs, but re-authorzation was a simple adjustment.

Good luck with your cloning.

Hello, I have a first gen 128 GB SSD for my OS drive (win 7 64 pro) and I just got a samsung EVO 500 GB drive I want to replace it with. (520 MB/s read / write. Yes!)

- I want to clone the original drive. Do I need to make a partition on the 500 that is exactly 128? I was hoping this was not the case because my program files directory is huge and I wanted more room it.

- Best software for this task? Will windows built in drive imaging tool be ok?

- Any other gotchas I should look for?

Thanks!
