The evolution iExpression does not create exactly this effect, but something similar and is fully automatic:

If you apply it to a text with two keyframes, one being a longer text and one a shorter text only containing some words (or letters) of the first one, it will create a transition from the first text to the second by step by step deleting the letters not used in the second text.
It can also insert stuff if necessaray. In general it creates transitions from one text to the next by inserting or deleting as little letters as possible (a.k.a minimum edit distance or Levenshtein distance). It also offers advanced control to fine-tune the transition.

I'm actually willing to do most of the work myself…  Just wanted to hear from expression gurus if this even sounds possible before I go down the road of trying to figure it out.  I'm trying to avoid having to keyframe the whole thing as I have a bunch of these to do…  Would love to just be able to put the beginning and end phrase/word and just move a slider to do the rest.  Impossible?!
