Hi James,

these expressions will be helpful:

http://mamoworld.com/after-effects-expression/distribute-3d-grid
http://mamoworld.com/after-effects-expression/distribute-3d-circle-and-spiral
http://mamoworld.com/after-effects-expression/distribute-3d-cylinder
http://mamoworld.com/after-effects-expression/distribute-3d-random

If you want to ensure you only have layers next to the path where your camera flys, you could try to use the spiral or cylinder variant and make the camera fly though this cylinder or spiral. Then increase the wiggle parameter so much that it does not look like a cylinder or spiral anymore.

Also note the advanced "layer offset" parameters. These can be used to make layers that the camera already passed by "jump" to reappear in front of the camera. By this you can get the impression that there are much more layers than you actually have.

As an no expressions alternative, you might also consider plane space:

Cheers,
Mathias
