As I understand it, thunderbolt ports are backwards compatible with mini display port based hardware, but not vice versa… meaning, as I understand it, you can't hook a thunderbolt based device into a mini display port, but you can plug a mini display port device into a thunderbolt port. Ive been able to plug a mini display port to hdmi converter into the thunderbolt port of my new macbook air, works no problem… Confusing, yes! Because Apple says you can. (Even if you can't plug a mDP display into the TB jack on the TB display - yes, I know that; that's not what I'm doing here.) I've tried it with both the mini Display Port connectors on an ATI/AMD Radeon HD 5870, and the Display Port connector on an NVIDIA Quadro 4000 (through a MDP to DP adaptor), and neither work. The Mac - through remote screen sharing - says no monitor is connected. The monitor itself works fine when plugged into a genuine Thunderbolt connector on one of our laptops. Is there a magic spell to get this to work? Do I need to sacrifice a chicken or something?
