Need the collective wisdom of actual users (as opposed to Apple Store employees or trolls on other forums):

Based on the explicit advice of an Apple Store employee, I bought an Apple Thunderbolt display with the intention of using it temporarily on the mini Display Port output of the video card in a current-gen Mac Pro, with the idea of migrating it to a true Thunderboth-equipped laptop or Mac Pro later. Because Apple says you can. (Even if you can't plug a mDP display into the TB jack on the TB display - yes, I know that; that's not what I'm doing here.)

I've tried it with both the mini Display Port connectors on an ATI/AMD Radeon HD 5870, and the Display Port connector on an NVIDIA Quadro 4000 (through a MDP to DP adaptor), and neither work. The Mac - through remote screen sharing - says no monitor is connected.

The monitor itself works fine when plugged into a genuine Thunderbolt connector on one of our laptops.

Is there a magic spell to get this to work? Do I need to sacrifice a chicken or something? Or was I lied to?

I've got an animator who took over a project of mine for a client, and he's only running on AE 5.5 and I'm on CC.  I provided CC and CS6 versions of the project, but he can't open either.. 

Would need conversion to 5.5 if possible.

message me off-list if you can help and I'll provide a link to the file in question.. just need it opened, saved down to 5.5 and closed, no worries about assets being missing, etc.
