I know I had to do that on an older Mac Pro back when they just started putting Nehalem chips in. It would work so much better with it off that it was almost night and day. Granted that was 4 years ago though. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a hinky file. The source images are 16 bit Tiff files and the screen grab program used on it is a bit shoddy. -Rob P.S. Also, make sure hyperthreading is turned off in your bios. You should have only 6 cores showing in your system.

I have almost the exact same setup as you, 980/ non-x and as would hang and use only one core because it couldn't figure out how to start the other processes on the other cores. I don't know what the deal was, but turning off hyperthreading made renders smooth and everything was good as gold again.
