I suppose it's not that LZW doesn't work with 16bit tiffs, it's just that it's often less efficient to use it.  I just did a quick google to see if there was much on the topic, and found this site with some comparison tables:

http://havecamerawilltravel.com/photographer/tiff-image-compression-lzw-zip

as well as a post from Thomas Knoll himself on the Adobe Photoshop forum saying the same thing.
But if you're dealing with flat solid colours or other content that is more suitable then LZW might work well for you.

FWIW I mentioned this because the original post reminded me of a project I worked on - many years ago now!  I was at a small studio and we were working on a high-end project, I was compositing multi-pass 3D renders.  It was the first time we had worked at 4K and it was decided that we would comp everything in 16bit.

We had all sorts of problems with hangs, crashes, slow renders etc etc.  We initially thought it was a bug with After Effects and maybe to do with 16 bit rendering.  Then the SAN / NAS went down and couldn't be resurrected, and a support guy had to be called in.  He said the problem was actually the SAN switch not coping with the load, and although it worked OK when we were comping 8 bit at standard or HD res, as soon as we all switched to 4K and 16 bit the increased bandwidth demands killed it.  I remember the guy saying 'the switch you've got is worth about 10 grand.  The minimum spec switch we recommend costs about 30 grand'.  So all of the problems had nothing to do with software, but actually the network hardware.

Anyway...

Ok. Caught up with the thread. Yes it was a large project with big images and very long sequences and LZW definitely helped so ymmv
