That lag drives me crazy, too. A workaround is to drop down the settings for your timeline panel and disable "show render cache indicators". That makes it buttery smoothy, but unfortunately you lose the colored cache indicators :(.

For me it's worth it, even though I have to guess where my ram previews are.
