I’ve spent the last 7 years rearranging my AE workspace panels, and I’m never fully satisfied with the layouts I come up with. I think it’s mainly because AE doesn’t allow you to nest a group of panels within a single collapsible panel, which results in necessarily crazy tiled workspaces like many of the examples posted in this thread.
Generally, I don’t want/need to see all of my ScriptUI panels all the time, while I’m working. It’s distracting, and is a huge waste of screen real-estate. To use Zack’s layout example, I wish there was a way that you could contain all of the panels on the right-hand side of his layout, so that you could toggle the appearance of the entire group of panels with a single click (or even better, a user-defined keyboard shortcut!). In a way, this hearkens back to the "connected-but-collapsible” inspector palette UI paradigm that Macromedia used in the old MX apps, back in the day.
This way, you could access your own “toolbox” of frequently accessed ScriptUI scripts, laid out exactly how you’d want them, but then they could be easily dismissed, to make room for the stuff that really matters, like Comp Viewers, Timelines and the Effects Panel.
I guess I’m off to visit the Adobe wishlist URL now...
