search your drive for "coreaudio" or "core audio" and look for a .plist extension.  

I had a "missing audio" problem years ago that was solved by trashing them.  It *might* help with your issue.

There's another one for "audiomidisetup"

Generally, no harm is done by trashing prefs.  Some prefs hold authorizations (ie, plug-ins), and you may need to re-authorize.
