seriously.... $100 1tb USB hard drive. next question... maybe get a 3.0 adapter for faster access. ok power it up often enough. I've had drives sit for quite a while and work fine. I use ChronoSync to match up local storage to back up drives rather painlessly. Time Machine can also work ok for some projects.

there is nothing economical about LTO despite claims when you compare either bare drives + eSATA dock or simple USB3 external drives.

don't every think of optical media as stable, not the recordable kind. I had over 100 DVD-R's go bad due to very low light level exposure. Bad batch... thankfully what I lost doesn't matter and I had backups on... hard drives !
