(I can do the same thing, probably using a similar workflow.=20

1: Convert art to vectors. Open in Illustrator.
2. Copy paths from Illustrator to AE. Use generated vector masks as =
position path for hand with pen.
3. Paste mask shape into hand layer position attributes , AE auto =
converts that to keyframes.

Hand will follow path shape. Composite Hand layer over artwork, use =
stroke effect to reveal artwork as hand passes over it.

That's the gist of it.
