Some of my mograph students have attempted to use Raytracing in AE and the results were not worth the enormous cost. However, since they are students, they couldn't pony up for Element.

Nice work Brian, thanks for sharing. Some really good uses for Element I can see.

From the tutorials on VCP it seems to be really quite responsive for what it does. And even for 3D text it seems at face value a better option than the ray traced option in CS6. I've used the 3D ray tracing in CS6 at work and its pathetically slow to the point of being unusable. If Element is as good as it seems it would be a far better and more affordable solution. I dont think true ray tracing is a deal breaker when the environment mapping looks so good.

sorry for another post, but I dug up a couple of other little projects that ended up in Element at some point too.

This was a 10th anniversary card we ran in front of all of our videos earlier this year. There are several instances of the globe composited in different ways to create a sort of universal studios effect.

and the titles for a documentary I worked on earlier this year. The goal was to come up with titles that look like they were of the era. I don't know that we quite hit it, but I like hte look.

It's a pretty versatile little plugin. Sometimes it's a bit buggy, but I'm thankful I have it in my arsenal.

Yeah the facility I work at puts OF on everything. It can be nice subtle effect. I agree I'll get the most use out of that.

Out of curiosity, what kind of real world everyday projects have folks used Element on. For the type of corporate/industrial work I do I'm not sure I could squeeze 3D particles in there. The VCP reel for Element looks lovely, but it doesn't venture far beyond military aircraft and morphing spheres.

I too use both. I think OF would be used more. We do a lot of projection mapping here, so we use Element more than the most might.

I have both, and I use OF much more than Element.  But, I think what's best for you depends on what your needs are.  Some people put flares on everything, including Element; but you'd rarely hear the reverse of that, I'd think.

I'd like to know, in your opinions, what is the most useful and must-have plug-in between the VideoCopilot Element 3D or Optical Flares. They use Optical Flares a LOT at the facility I have been working at, but E3D sure does look fun. Is it something you can use everyday or does it become 'oh that again' like Trapcode Shine did.

Obviously given my druthers I'd add both to my arsenal, but reality being what it is and the sale going on this week, I'd like to get one of them.

cheers
