Sorry - thought I was clear.  You know when you add a 2D image and add a light, the image becomes black?  Then you have to change accept lights to off and the image reappears.  The appearance is that you are changing it TO accept lights since now you can see it.

Just not understanding what's really happening there.

An object can still cast shadows or accept shadows even if it doesn't accept lights.

This is just something that I've wondered since beginning using AE and that's what is the logic behind having to change material settings to "off" on accept lights when you USE a light.  Logically, in my pea brained head, "accept" lights is the more correct answer.  I change now purely because that's the thing to do but never understood why.
