Well, for what it's worth, it was not the Boris 3D Image Shatter plug-in. I knew I did not own any Boris software. It turned out to be a CoreMelt plug-in 3D Shatter. 

It is closer to the Card Wipe than Shatter as far as results go. And it is quite a cool little effect too for transitions.
