Uninstalling AE actually leaves all your non-native plugins and scripts in place, even your preferences (if you so choose). Just went through this a few days ago to get to the latest version of 12.2. Was surprisingly painless (whew) and didn't take nearly as long as I feared (minutes, not hours ).
