I actually find AE's Ray-tracing to be awesome! It's usually the case that folks who dislike it have issues related to knowing how to work with the various preview options. It also works well with Dynamic Linking with Pr which opens up a lot of creative options.
What was sad was a lack of improvement going from CS6 to CC.
BTW, a very versatile and robust Onion Skinning feature can be easily done with Expressions and a Controller Layer. I hope it won't take too much team effort to develop it if it's going to be implemented. We should be looking at a built-in 2D and 3D physics engine.
1) Make Shape Layers fully 3D
2) Integrate Range Selectors for the Repeater Attribute in a Shape Layer
3) Unified 3D Workspace
4) Node-based Effect Control Panel
5) Make the Mask Feature an Effect
6) Scrubbing/Tweaking of a Keyframe's Influence Handles directly in the Timeline
7) Reduce Cache Size Requirements
8) Improve Overall Speed/Performance
9) Allow Effects, Mattes and Masks on Extruded Layers
10) Include many, many more GPU-accelerated Effects
11) Twist Maxon's Arm (and legs) for us to have more MoGraph thingies in C4D Lite
12) A More Versatile and Intelligent 2D/3D Distortion Tool - we had this Freeform
13) Allow Import of 3D Models into Shape Layers
14) Faster Lights Rendering
15) Make #14 Faster
16) Share Effects with PPro via DL - especially the Color Grading Effects
17) Add More DL Functionality for a More Seamless DL Experience
18) UI needs to be Improved in many many places where target/source doesn't have a Visual Presence (for example Paint's Clone Source)
19) Expression Point Controls to be More Intelligent - with built-in solutions to point to almost an layer's applicable attributes, including an effect's point
20) Improve Rotobrush and the 3D Camera Tracker - make them more robust and pliable to user-intervention
Thank you Santa Kopriva.

That's interesting background, but I seem to recall that the plug was hyped as a major new feature to whatever version it was first introduced. Ray Tracing is in the same Hall of Shame. You guys may be learning a lot from your introduction and development, which may lead to great things later on, but on the customer side, I'll speak for myself, I'm a bit underwhelmed by the hype, not the developmental effort. Maybe I wouldn't react this way if you'd just slip those new things in without selling them as must-have new features. That's all I'm saying. Don't get me wrong, I love what you all are doing.
