I'm obviously biased, but you should try out the legalizer in Color Finesse, which you already have in AE.

You get your choice of legalizing methods, either reducing saturation or reducing luma, or our "Smart Limit" mode (the default) which does a combination of methods, trying to achieve a perceptual match to the original color.

The Legalizer controls are available directly in the ECW in CF's "simplified interface" so no need to launch the full UI.
