There are a couple of ways to do this. I've used a gradient wipe to create this type of effect. Lay out your text with the background. Animate a gradient layer on a solid layer(black will reveal no pixels, white will reveal all pixels). You can use any filter or combination of filters that gives you a black and white layer. You may need to pre-compose the gradient. I don't recall. Apply the Gradient Wipe filter to the text layer and select the gradient layer in the effect controls. Keyframe the transition as needed. I'm not at my computer now, so hopefully I'm close!
