Rates can obviously vary. I work for corporate and film clients in NYC. I do have a $10 / hr kit rental surcharge for onsite work where I have to use my laptop and gear. I figure that pays for my insurance if anything happens above and beyond onsite. (I have renter's insurance that covers all my gear, even out of the home, with a deductible). I have put time into making sure I have the best gear, and I make sure the client knows they are getting the best. If the client offers a job at a fixed rate, and I want it, I won't add the fee on top. I also do not charge any kind of equipment fees for working offsite as I have calculated it into my rate. And it offsets the inconvenience and cost of having to commute. Rachel I have charged friends on low budget projects as low as $400 / day for 10 hours design, animation / VFX. My usual rate is around $750 for corporate / commercial work. More if it involves a lot of 3D. However I only give a quote after I have heard as much info as possible about a project. Sometimes you have to build in an idiot tax. If you don't really want to deal with certain clients, or it's way out of town, it's good to quote more than you think in case you get it. It's all a game of poker. Judge each job individually is my advice. Nothing is set in stone. It is their job to get the lowest price from you, so aim a bit higher than you are willing to settle for. Basic haggling skills are good.
