I plan to have a camera truck along several framed photos on a virtual tabletop, and give the impression they're lit by a fireplace, and casting dancing shadows on a virtual back wall and table top.

So, I guess practical fire isn't an option, such as some of the Andrew Kramer stock fire stuff?  I know there are a couple of them that look just like a normal camp fire and are real of course.
