What I was doing wrong was adding a shape layer and then trying to add a mask to that, when what I needed to do was add a solid layer.... now I can accomplish what I wanted to accomplish. Ah, please disregard that question... just = figured out what I was doing wrong.

What I was doing wrong was= adding a shape layer and then trying to add a mask to that, when what I ne= eded to do was add a solid layer.... now I can accomplish what I wanted to = accomplish.
