Yes lens distortion is another hurdle. Haven't tried AE's 3D solves and how they handle that. I use Syntheyes, and if you have enough track points spread about it can easily solve for the distortion. The Optics Compensation plugin can do wonders as mentioned. It does have a limit point though.

After Effects does have optics compensation plug-in but has minimal parameters. Stabilized by onboard Zenmuse gimbal and default Warp Stabilizer settings.  Shot on cloudy day…was just a test shot. Exported a low quality. My first with the new gimbal.   Seem good enough for tracking? GoPro Hero 3+.

As Chris mentions, drone footage can produce motion blur (or undesirable camera motion). First you will probably want to stabilize/smooth your footage. 

Most likely markers are not needed for aerial footage and most of the 3D trackers will be able to handle basic moves. 

 

Since this is your first 3D project, I would recommend relatively simple moves. You can run into issues with full 360 rotations, etc. 

 

Lastly, the 3D camera solver module found in mocha AE v3 & mocha Pro v3 was designed as an alternative to feature based 3D trackers and excels on out of focus or blurred footage. It does not "replace" Syntheyes or PFtrack for feature depth, but may be an easier to learn workflow for newer users.

Helle people,

I will start a exciting motion tracking assignment in a week.

The footage will be shot by a Drone. We will film a large open field where
there eventually be 3D buildings.

So some motion tracking and some 3D work.

Would the 3D camera tracker inside of AE be sufficient or should I try an other one?

And do I need tracker markers on the field?

I am new at this and every tip is very welcome.
