Subject: [AE] Mask/Shape Layer Point Selection

I've been working in AE for over a decade and for the la= st year or two I'm finding myself struggling to get back to what seemed ver= y simple: selecting individual points/portions on a mask or shape. Sometime I highlight the shape/mask, lasso the desired portion a= nd I'm golden. Got the points I want. Sometimes it seems like no matter wha= t I do I cannot get AE to deselect portions of a mask or select only specif= ic points. Sometimes I click the middle of a mask area and the whole mask moves (to the point where I can't= get it to not move) and sometimes the layer moves, not the mask (which, un= less I have the 'mask path' selected in the timeline is what I consider the= 'normal behavior' here.) The issue I'm having is that I cannot seem to get the same behavior from point/mask = selection in AE on a consistent basis. The rules seem to change.=
