The rumor was that Autodesk, Dassault Systems and Adobe bid for Softimage when Avid was selling it. Too bad that the worst possible buyer got it.
Im still using Softimage and every time i open another 3d app, i get very sad how bad they all are ux wise compared to Softimage. It is so logical built up and fast to use, and Im sure most AE would have loved it if Adobe bought it, maybe even forced to give AE to get some of the very nice UX features from Softimage :-)
All text based, no stupid icon hell like Maya and Cinema, and this way before the current typography based UI trend :-D
But I can also understand why Adobe didnt buy it, with the codebase of SI so tightly connected to Windows from the time when Microsoft owned them, making a osx port very hard.
RIP Softimage :-(

Considering how tightly integrated AE and C4D are becoming, it's starting to feel like they're owned by the same company as it is (and that being a good thing).

I thought it was a shame that Adobe never purchased SketchUp., even as a modeler for Photoshop and AE. Instead Google bought it, and then subsequently dumped it.
It's a great modeler (for simple things anyway).

People said that is why AD originally bought SI - to keep it from Adobe.
