Gary, Softimage was used to create the recent Lego movie that has done very well in theaters. Also, all the finalists in the recent British Animation Awards (tv commercials) did their work in Softimage. Similarly, both silver and gold award winners in the 3d animation category at this year’s British Television Advertising Craft awards were Softimage companies. Softimage definitely had a larger presence in Europe and especially Japan. Softimage scaled well and really shone in small to mid-sized outfits since it was full featured out of the box.  

It is truly a sad thing to see such a capable tool get swept away. One in which many of us have invested decades to master. There is a furor going on over on the Softimage list and many company owners are speaking up about it. I personally have lost what little respect I had for Autodesk and am looking to move onto some other company's offering once I have to leave Softimage.

That article did not mention the object library, 3DWarehouse or whatever it is called . Didn't Google own that too, was that part of the package that got sold? That was half of what makes SU so useful.

People said that is why AD originally bought SI - to keep it from Adobe.

Great software, it will probably end up in Autodesk's basement somewhere, they have already stated they won't sell it off because it contains too many of their IPs or something. They just completed the LEGO movie using SI. It has a pretty fantastic node scripting language. I feel terrible for shops that built their whole pipelines on SI. Or plugin developers who wasted thousands. AD are pushing everyone to Max or Maya instead. For an interesting perspective there is a thread on cgsociety here


And probably not a coincidence, but a heads up if anyone was looking to upgrade, there is 10% off C4D upgrades at toolfarm this month, with added discount for your C4D lite licenses that come with AE CC. Not a shill, but it's good software, and definitely complements my Maya knowledge. People are saying they will jump ship to 
C4D, Houdini, Modo or even Blender instead of staying with Autodesk.
