I cut my teeth on Softimage when I started in 1996, it's sad to see it go.
That being said, I've been eyeballing getting back into Lightwave 3D who has a pretty good deal for those who want to move over to it from Softimage. I've been seeing VERY impressive renders coming from it and it sounds like the new blood they've injected into the staff has been a good looking catalyst for change there. Zoic studios (http://www.zoicstudios.com/) has been pumping out a lot of nice looking stuff and they use Lightwave frequently. I think they've been finally adding quite a bit of After Effects capabilities to it that I have not had a chance to try out yet but is on the to do list.
Another program that's been growing by leaps and bounds is Modo, I have a friend that loves to model using it. I haven't seen much about working with AE in it's promotional materials but admittedly I haven't been paying too much attention to it.

Spot on Byron, this is a good summary of the what's really happening with Softimage.
I think the negative impact is bigger than Autodesk expected. I would much rather deal with a company like The Foundry or Maxon in the future.
