It was initially randomly placed, actually animated coming from random directions and settling in the line, but they thought it was too much movement, and wanted very precise focal points for each product, so I ended up keyframing each position by hand. This is where "use keyframes as offset" was essential! I could maintain the flexibility of the null controllers in 3D space while tailoring it to the client's direction. The auto-refresh property of it was also great for previewing small iterations

Did you use the wiggle parameter of the distribute 3d line to randomize the placement or is this all controlled manually?
