My policy is to only upgrade when it's necessary… required for a new feature or say compatibility with a video card driver, etc. or some fantastic new feature in Ae or Pr.

And don't upgrade to any Mac OS prior to x.x.3, 4 or 5.

10.8.5 is working great here, and as others have warned, 10.9.x isn't without some problems (and one that was reported as a severe security issue).

i have a few machines on 10.8 and one on 10.9 and it has more issues than the rest combined.
renders dont show up in the finder sometimes, many utilities and apps tend to crash where they ran fine on 10.8

id stick to 10.8 for now personally

while i can’t say it’s my favorite, i just finally bit the bullet too from 10.6.8 and upgraded to mavericks

so far 10.9.2 is working ok - i only lost a couple old apps that needed carbon - one being golive… got my moneys worth in that one for sure… and then a few random cheap or free type utility apps… it did give a warning pop up that golive would not work, the little apps i guess were not in the database to be notified about.

some of the stuff in mavericks i find annoying - just getting a big consumery - kinda like windows is but not that bad yet… i dread the day when apple goes full noob and introduces something like Microsoft bob

overall i expected a lot more disruption but so far so good - been about a week and a half with mavericks

i quit everything, rebooted then did do a full HD backup and then also made sure my time machine was just backed up just before i did the update - took a few hours to do - 1.5 hours to download the update and then probably another 1.5 to install

after reboot was ok. just a couple preference settings, getting used to the new mail pane on the left (did not want to fight it and use the legacy way) just trying to adapt to the new ways so i don’t get too crotchety and old man sounding.

good luck on it,

dann

Even though it's not broken, it appears the time has come for me to upgrade my main workstation (MacPro 5.1) from good old OS X 10.7.5 (lion).

Red Giant Universe will only run in 10.8 and later, plus Lion support (and compatibility) will soon be dwindling/ending for a few of my main go-to apps.

So the question is, do I finally move to Mountain Lion or bite the bullet and go full bore into Mavericks.

I'm running 10.9.2 on my MacbookPro with no issues, but I don't do much heavy lifting on that machine.

Suggestions? (please no "switch to windows" comments, thanks)
