The new macs also support USB3 which should be plenty fast for video. I edit off of USB3 drives all the time.

That's my other system, Macbook pro (mid 2012). It's a good little slugger when I can't lug the big box around. I'll have to keep an eye open for a sale although if my Win 7 install continues to act up this might happen sooner rather than later.
Thanks for the advice Teddy, Brian. If anything like Brian said, I can probably get an external enclosure although thunderbolt enclosures are horribly pricey still if I go Mac.

Honestly that system probably still outclasses all but the high end macbook and mac pro. Get a 512 GB SSD. Don't look back. The SSD boot drive + SSD cache makes a huge difference in performance and render speed. SSD's last longer than HDDs anyway. I'd highly recommend the Samsung EVO pro line, I get over 600 / 500 MB ps read / write on a single SATA III drive.
I recently did that same upgrade to my oldest workstation that now is my home theater pc / server, and it went from over a 3 minute cold startup to under 40 seconds
