A few more things that may or may not apply:

*** Are you running TechTool Pro with the Directory Backup enabled? This can be very helpful for recovering data a from a damaged volume (should it ever happen); however, the directory structure information can take up a lot of disk space.

*** I am remembering something about Verbose Logging Mode creating log files that grew to taking up a large amount of disk space, but that way years ago (like 2002-ish). I can't even remember how to check of it is on or off.

*** Do you have Roxio Toast installed? An easy, non-Terminal way to reveal how much data each folder and file is taking up on your drive is to select Toast's Data tab and then drag and drop your boot drive into the Toast window. It will take Toast some time to build the information, but you will have a list of each folder on the drive with how much disk space each free is taking. For in stance, you can then troubleshoot why the "tmp" folder has 213GB in it instead of just KB worth of data.  Or even just that one Best Settings Lossless render that mysteriously was not where you expected it to be five projects ago.

Hi Lou,

Have you checked the Application Support folders in the Library folders? I find that these get clogged up with cache files so I do a weekly, manual clean of these.

You need to go to both;

Users/Yourname/Library. In the Finder, hold down Option and click on the Go menu, this will allow you to open the Library folder (usually hidden)

The After Effects disk cache folders can get pretty big. I advise having them on a separate drive.

You may also want to check the root library folder too; /Library

Hope this helps.

Suddenly, I am plagued with this error box every day several times a day.

"Your Mac OSX startup disk has no more space
available for application memory"

I also lists my open apps to force quit.   I have 176 GB left on  my startup drive and 16 GB of RAM.

The window never goes away even when I force quit apps but it can happen if I just have mail open.

Running OS 10.8.5

What is causing this and how do I get rid of it?

thanks

Lou

cheers,

Angie
