I use motion = sketch on a null object, you can delete the keyframes and re-try as many = times as it takes until you're happy with the movement. Then you = can just copy the keyframes to the write-on effect and use it as a luma = or alpha matte.

The only catch with this method = is that the write on (and stroke) effects have a maximum brush size of = 50. If this is too small for the effect you need then do it a = half-res and scale up the solid to = fit.
