I use motion sketch on a null object, you can delete the keyframes and = re-try as many times as it takes until you're happy with the movement. = Then you can just copy the keyframes to the write-on effect and use it = as a luma or alpha matte. The only catch with this method is that the write on (and stroke) = effects have a maximum brush size of 50.
