If you don't get the gradient wipe working for you, then try using motion sketch and recording the wipe movement with the mouse.
I use motion sketch on a null object, you can delete the keyframes and re-try as many times as it takes until you're happy with the movement.  Then you can just copy the keyframes to the write-on effect and use it as a luma or alpha matte.

The only catch with this method is that the write on (and stroke) effects have a maximum brush size of 50.  If this is too small for the effect you need then do it a half-res and scale up the solid to fit.

Does not need to be photo-real or advanced. More corporate animated illustrated style.
