i've had to make smoke like this countless times

its very easy and fast to draw a bunch of circles right in AE as shape layers and then animate them accordingly. if you want stop motion style precomp them and set the framerate lower and lock that rate in the comp prefs, or apply a posterizeTime expression

you can make something like that in a few minutes

Hey Brian.M for the sake of better understanding
(because I will resort to frame by frame seems the best course of action)
about the radiowaves effect it seems it doesn't have a fill or am I wrong? i.e it only
allows the duplication of the contours but not the inside. (guess otherwise it would be a particle system)
so I would get empty puffs I guess..

It honestly doesn't take long to draw three or fours cartoon puffs on Photoshop layers and sequence them in AE, but if you want to automate it, use an AE mask shaped like a puff, as a source shape for Radio Waves.

hey fellas

I'm trying to figure out a way to make a cool cartoon puff of smoke
but avoid doing it frame by frame in photoshop.

I'm trying to achieve this type of effect

I think particular won't do and ae shapes give too symmetrical results
for this type of animation.

any workflow suggestions?

or do I have to resort to frame by frame in flash or photoshop?
(which from my research is the preferred technique for this type of animation)

Thanks
