A bit more information:

     Apparently the photoshop file was saved on a mac without the .psd 
extension. When adding the .psd it still refuses to update however. When 
opening the file on the Mac, everything works well without the 
extension. When an extension was added, I began to get zero denominator 
errors when trying to relink files.
