You can absolutely use your own textures but it's done primarily though the E3D interface.

Although, in a more complex procedure, Andrew has a tutorial in which you can use your image maps within AE.  Like if you wanted to add text to the side of an airplaine or something, it's best done that way.  Or an explosive hole is done that way.

He covers that in one of the more recent tutorials that came with his Jet Pack.

When you are in the Element interface, you can create your own textures, or use the presets. I'm fairly certain that you can't import textures from other applications. At least I've not figured that part out yet.

For the environment.hdr file. In the AE interface: Throw that into the bottom of your comp and turn the visibility off. Under "Custom Texture Maps" assign it to one of the layers. Back in the Element interface, click on environment near the top and choose the custom layer you assigned it to. You can also assign the environment to a specific texture in the texture editor.

Hope that helps.

I really don't know much about 3D. A client wants a spinning coin. I bought an .obj on TurboSquid. Imported it into Element 3D 1.6. It comes in looking like a white coin-ish thing, but not a silver coin. I'm guessing that I have to assign some of the textures that come with the model, but not sure how to do that.

The textures are named thusly:

anisotropy
diff
normal
rotation
spe_color_stc
spec_color

(There's also an "environment.hdr," but that won't load into element's Environment importer.)

The options for texturing in Element are:

Diffuse
Specular
Refl/Refr
Illumination
Normal Bump
Occlusion
Environment

Normal seems obvious to me, but can anybody help me match the proper texture files to the options in Element?

Thanks,
Jim C.
