I've used Rotobrush on a few of these projects and it's been fantastic. Usually a mix of actual mattes for the screen/screen contents from Mocha combined with rotobrush to get the hands out of the way and it's all good. Only difficult part is a potential lack of contrast between the hand and the footage (or motion blur), but those are prevalent concerns to look out for in this work anyhow.

I have never thought to use rotobrush, I'm curious if people think it's actually a usable tool for this kind of job, if so then I would switch to using a grey instead of green.

I go back and forth too, most recently I made a dark green screen with some small patterned tracking markers in the corners.

The green allowed me to key the fingers off for both the main finger tap and the reflections.

It needs to be dark green to avoid spill from the screen contaminating the finger.

I used the tracking data to erase the tracking markers from the reflection pass.

thank you Robert. but wouldn't the bright screen lose the blend mode option in the composite after?.
notice the glow and flare coming from the sun creating that lighting on the screen,
and of course there are real reflections where you see the girls face (sec 37).

when you put and image on that black and use screen mode you're pretty much done. (if the track is good..)

yes, you would loose the easy blend mode compositing, but it was more to get the screen lighting on the hand that is much harder to fake than the reflection. There is almost always a trade-off for doing it one way or the other. So there really is no 1 way to do it correctly, it all depends on the shot and what lighting you have.

And thanks to Rick about the noise pattern trick, never really thought about that, but it ofcourse makes perfect sense when using Mocha. i guess you have various noise patterns sizes depending on how far away the screen is in the shot?
