that's right Danny it is messy but I figured out the workflow. its just this duration / frame rate thing that would will make it better.

the first dialog box is basically for multiple files -> you can select many files and for them choose footage/Layer size/Comp Size
and you won't get another dialog box after that. but, alas,  its with merged layer styles and merged masks (if it's Photoshop of course)

if you choose only one file in the first dialog box and choose there Layer size/Comp Size -you will get another dialog box with the selection you did before,
giving you the option to merge layer styles and masks or not.

if you choose only one file in the first dialog box and choose there Footage - it will ignore your selection in the next dialog box and you have to select footage again from there.
so basically you should ignore the first dialog box altogether (unless you want multiple files with merged layer styles merged masks).

importing graphics in general is messy...

for example, go to import. select a psd. that dialog box has the option of choosing whether you want to import as footage or comp and the option for a sequence. hit ok then you get another dialag box, again with the option to choose footage vs layered comp etc, but it completely ignores what is selected in the previous dialog box...

You are right!

I hate that too.

There's some ae scripts that can fix it and the nested precomps plus layers etc. without too much hassle - but still - you shouldn't have to.

Good request!

hey guys,

I have been thinking about it for some time now and before I send a formal feature request
I wanted to pass this through you to check if I was missing something here.

does it seem to you also that AE's import dialog box on a layered Photoshop/illustrator
should contain a field in which you could specify the duration and frame rate
for a layered Psd or Ai file before AE actually made a composition?

AE gives you the last duration and frame rate used which is in my opinion
a high potential for a lot of trouble if you're not careful.

too often I get fooled by that one. and of course the problem depends
on how many pre-comps are there, but the frame rate can also fool you
if you change them occasionally.

If I was aware before hand, what I do is create a blank composition, with
the proper duration and frame rate - and then I import the file. but too often
I've already started and now I see got tons of pre-comps to extend.
(I can also re import after making blank composition but its cumbersome)

what do you guys think?

am I right or am I right?
