It would be very viable as an alternative if not for the frame buffer and transfer function issues. We use a lot of transfer layers to help line up the photoanimation based on the science advisor's distance calculations.

A film is - or should be - more like music than like fiction. It should be a progression of moods and feelings. The theme, what's behind the emotion, the meaning, all that comes later.

This is probably not going to be a reasonable alternative for you guys, but ProEXR can save out a multi-layer file from Photoshop that can be read in AE.  If you use the ProEXR Comp Creator functionality, it will do all the setup for you.

Problem is that first you'll have to convert your Photoshop document to 32-bit mode which will make it take up a lot more memory and may take a long time for big files.  Also, it doesn't transfer adjustment layers or anything like that, just regular layers.  And because the files use floating point, they are probably bigger and slower than an 8-bit PSD.

But just wanted to point out that there is an alternative at least!
