So knowing that, is there any good reason really to by a "for mac" USB drive really then like a Western Digital USB one "for mac" if you might as well buy one for PC and format it for Mac?

Also, can you format a USB NTFS drive on Mac OS X to a different format so you can read/write?

I don't think that anyone chimed in on your drive format question yet.

If the the Window/PC USB hard drive is formatted as FAT32 or ExFAT, Mac OS
X will read and write. If the drive is NTFS, Mac OS X will read only;
however, a third party driver called Paragon NTFS for Mac will enable full
read/write with NTFS formatted drives
(http://www.paragon-software.com/home/ntfs-mac/).

Windows runs well via Apple Bootcamp (not so well with Parallels), if you
happen to need a Windows machine in addition to just mounting Windows
formatted drives. Also, if you're using CC, it's possible to have AE, PR,
PS and AI on he Windows side of a Mac as well.

I was in the same boat.  I love working on my older 15" MBP.
Bring the project to the studio to do the heavy lifting.

PROS: portable, attach thunderbolt as necessary (storage/monitor), bring
work anywhere
CONS: expensive, not as powerful, bring work everywhere

Ae, Pr and even C4D run well enough on it, but big renders should get
ported
to a desktop.
