Thanks for the replies, very useful.  I have decided that my next computer will be a portable - most probably a 13" Macbook Pro - and it's very reassuring to read all the messages from people who work on their laptops.

I managed to resurrect my iMac for the 2nd time by baking the video card in the oven, which sounds bizarre but works.  So my immediate sense of panic when I found myself without a computer has resided and I've been able to research all the options more thoroughly.  I didn't want to make a rash decision but I'll be ready next time my iMac decides to flatline.

Nah, just learn to go minimal and work with the laptop shortcuts - which also allows you to use that super nice minimal apple keyboard with no num-pad. So clean. 

Also maximize that trackpad by turning tap select on and three finger drag etc. I edit entire vids with the Air using just the trackpad and built in keyboard on airplanes or in a hammock sipping a mai tai. 'Tis lovely.

Takes a week or two to get used to, but once you go minimal, you'll never go back. :-)
