A little late to the party on this thread, but I work half the year on an  iMac when I'm in town, and half the year on my MBP when I'm in Toronto.  I keep a 23" inch screen in Toronto which I hook my laptop to when I get in.  That enables me to travel back and forth lightly -- not like the old days when I used to have to schlep big honkin' CRT monitors and a tower back and forth.  I much prefer the iMac because of the 27" monitor and the additional ports and the fact that I can use dual monitors of equal size and placement. The MBP just doesn't lend itself to a dual monitor set up very well.  Even though mine is the 19", it's significantly smaller than the other monitor I use so there is always a size differential as well as a height differential as well as a placement differential because of the keyboard.  I place both units on a monitor bridge and the MBP ends up about about a foot behind the other monitor  -- making visual focusing a difficult.  It's always better to have dual monitors that are of equal size and height and at a similar work plane.

A laptop is essential for me because of the travelling I do and the film work I do downloading CF cards, reviewing dailies, etc., but like I started this off, I much prefer my iMac.

As far as a retina screen, are you sure you need it?  My MBP is razor sharp without it  -- one of the best screens I've seen and sharper than my iMac's I would say, but that's probably because it's a much smaller screen.

Often times I use a three monitor, two computer, set up, like when I get back to the U.S. and have to update my iMac from work I did on my MBP while in Toronto, or when I  need to render out a lengthy animation in my 3D app, and a product I just picked up that helps me put my MBP at the same height and plane as my iMac and other monitor is a laptop stand made by Furinno .  Check it out.  Very cool.

Just picking the collective brains of the list...

I have never had a laptop or any sort of portable computer, my home machine has been an iMac for the past 10years. My current imac has just died and I'm now thinking about replacing it with a MacBook Pro and a big monitor.

In the past I have worked from home considerably but currently I do very little work from home, and so having a powerful desktop machine seems a bit old fashioned. The portability of a MacBook versus an iMac is very appealing. Storage is not an issue because I already use an external storage system anyway.

Any thoughts on the pros/cons of working with AE on a laptop- specifically a retina MacBook Pro - versus an iMac?
