Appreciate the many answers. The little handles seemed helpful to me and I don't see where they get in the way at all.

I usually, as most do I presume, have a long series of things on the timeline and may render out various samples or portions of the whole.

If there is a shortcut to doing this, I'm all ears. I did set the in and out to get by last night but that was menu driven so not that efficient. At the time, I didn't check for keyboard shortcut on that. I was too focused on where the hell the handles went. lol
The best thing I like about the work area range is if you hit return, it will render anything in that range.
