If the scale-up is very fast, the motion blur gets 'cropped' so has squared off edges - see this photo: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1388508/MotionBlurCropping.jpg I've done a few more experiments and noticed this happens whenever a shape layer's transform properties are animated fast (but not when the actual layer's transform properties are animated).
