| Just catching up on this thread… I'm an Aeron fan, but another one to consider is the Ergohuman. I'm not a fan of the big balls and although I've tried posture chairs and liked them (the kneely down ones), I could still slump on them and they don't have arms. More recently I think that arm and shoulder support is very important and that getting the desk height right and minimising the effort it takes to use the mouse (or tablet) is essential to preventing upper back pain.
As you say, a chair is cheaper than back surgery.

PS. I haven't had time to check, but I think you'll find some suggestions in the user comments on this Ars Technica blog:
As an alternative to the Aeron, tried out a bunch of chairs in different various stores around town, and ended up ordering the Embody online. Ordering online (either through Herman Miller or a reseller), you get all sorts of cusotmization options to make it suit your needs specifically; how much adjustment options do you want? What size for the seat? Arms / no arms? Upgraded casters? Fancy colours/more breathable materials? etc.
