hoping someone from The Foundry or Maxon finally sits down and take a good hard look at the amazing workflow that Softimage has and take the good stuff and bring it to their app... untill then i will keep my license of Soft close... but im afraid i will wait forever for any of them catching up to a dead app in that department :-(

Heh buggy that it was (although I haven't met a 3D application that wasn't buggy in one way or another) I did enjoy that old version of Softimage 3D. That business went and closed it's doors literally 3 months after XSI was released so I really didn't get to sink my teeth into it as much as I wanted to. RIP Softimage, you can take the cemetery plot next to Commotion.

Hi

Im quite sure Softimage XSI still can open and translate those files, i remember when i started using it 10 years ago that it had that ability, and i dont think they removed that.
In the latest version of Softimage (and last version too... R.I.P. :-(... ) they added an Alembic exporter that i think is your best way to get anything reasonable translated into another app.
I have only v7.0 (the last Avid version, pre-Autodesk slowly murdering it) and i can only export OBJ and buggy FBX, so i unfortunately can't help you with this.

But maybe you can still download a 30 days trial from Autodesk, and import/export those scenes yourself.
Else you have to find someone with a license of the latest release of Softimage or the Autodesk Ultimate Creation Bundle (where it also should still be included)

...still sad that Adobe didn't buy Softimage when they had the chance... well, or just anybody else than Autodesk :-(

Hi everyone,

I was cleaning out my office on Sunday when I unearthed a box of old archival CDs from 14 years back. Unbelievably they still worked and I was able to access and download files off them. Back then I worked exclusively with Softimage 3D (pre XSI) on several ads and would love to look at the old files. Does anyone know of a way I can open them or translate the files to something Lightwave 3D or Cinema 4D can read?
