Curious if anyone thinks 4k will become a the new delivery format?  How likely is this?

I can appreciate it as a tool for acquiring content as Brian mentions, but not sure of the value as a final delivery format.  Notice how 3d televisions have gradually evaporated.  Electronics makers are so desperate to claw some more cash away from consumers, I feel like these formats get seeded to us in a some what insidious way.  Is there a pressing need for 4K broadcasts?  I sometimes feel like HD on a relatively large monitor is almost too much fidelity for most average size rooms…

It depends entirely on the kind of things you want to shoot.

4K currently has little real to-market delivery path, but it is a useful acquisition format for post work, since there are so many pixels to work with, crop in on etc. "Shoot now-Frame later" is a viable strategy with 4K.  And it is relatively future-proof, I suppose, if we all believe 4K is an inevitable delivery format.

As for your second question, a DSLR is a fine way to aquire video if you are accustomed to operating a film camera. If, however, you need things like fast auto-focus while recording, wide field of focus and smooth, motorized zoom, these things are harder to come by in the DSLR world. Also, unmodified DSLRs in the US are not allowed to record a clip longer than 30 minutes (for tax reasons!), so if you need to shoot long events, a "real" video camera is your best bet... or plan to budget for an external drive like the Blackmagic HyperDeck Shuttle.

I do shoot video with my 5D Mk III, but all of the add-ons make it much more cumbersome than a dedicated video camera, especially for walking around.

No issues that I'm aware of with any of this and AE.

Brian
