I can appreciate it as a tool for acquiring content as = Brian mentions, but not sure of the value as a final delivery format. =C2= =A0Notice how 3d televisions have gradually evaporated. =C2=A0Electronics m= akers are so desperate to claw some more cash away from consumers, I feel l= ike these formats get seeded to us in a some what insidious way. =C2=A0Is t= here a pressing need for 4K broadcasts? =C2=A0I sometimes feel like HD on a= relatively large monitor is almost too much fidelity for most average size= rooms=E2=80=A6

It depends entirely on the kind= of things you want to shoot.

4= K currently has little real to-market delivery path, but it is a useful acq= uisition format for post work, since there are so many pixels to work with,= crop in on etc. "Shoot now-Frame later" is a viable strategy wit= h 4K. =C2=A0And it is relatively future-proof, I suppose, if we all believe= 4K is an inevitable delivery format.

As for your second question, a DSLR is a fine way to aquire video if yo= u are accustomed to operating a film camera. If, however, you need things l= ike fast auto-focus while recording, wide field of focus and smooth, motori= zed zoom, these things are harder to come by in the DSLR world. Also, unmod= ified DSLRs in the US are not allowed to record a clip longer than 30 minut= es (for tax reasons!), so if you need to shoot long events, a "real&qu= ot; video camera is your best bet... or plan to budget for an external driv= e like the Blackmagic HyperDeck Shuttle.

I do shoot video with my 5D Mk III, but al= l of the add-ons make it much more cumbersome than a dedicated video camera= , especially for walking around.

No issues that I'm aware of with any of this and AE.
