FYI, there's  no recording limit on USA version of the GH4 (you're limited only by space on card and battery), unlike some other cameras. I've recorded 2 hour concerts with no stopping (in HD; on a 64GB card there's around 70 minutes of time at 2160p24, iirc).

Thanks Brian and Robert,

Some good points.  I'm also aware of the issue with that Black Magic camera and the scan lines or whatever it is. I've been in touch with one of the senior guys/salesman and mentioned all that as well.  Definitely makes me want to re-think whether I go there in the near future.  It seems at this point that maybe my Panasonic HMC150 is still a pretty good fella along with some more mobile high end small HD cams.

I did also note that 30 min limit thing.  Thanks.

Eric

It depends entirely on the kind of things you want to shoot.

4K currently has little real to-market delivery path, but it is a useful acquisition format for post work, since there are so many pixels to work with, crop in on etc. "Shoot now-Frame later" is a viable strategy with 4K.  And it is relatively future-proof, I suppose, if we all believe 4K is an inevitable delivery format.

As for your second question, a DSLR is a fine way to aquire video if you are accustomed to operating a film camera. If, however, you need things like fast auto-focus while recording, wide field of focus and smooth, motorized zoom, these things are harder to come by in the DSLR world. Also, unmodified DSLRs in the US are not allowed to record a clip longer than 30 minutes (for tax reasons!), so if you need to shoot long events, a "real" video camera is your best bet... or plan to budget for an external drive like the Blackmagic HyperDeck Shuttle.

I do shoot video with my 5D Mk III, but all of the add-ons make it much more cumbersome than a dedicated video camera, especially for walking around.

No issues that I'm aware of with any of this and AE.

Any thoughts out there on moving to 4K cameras?  I've been studying up on the Black Magic and hearing also about the GH4.  Maybe it's just me but is a DSLR type camera a logical transition from the more customary video camera?  I presume this is all no problem for using in after effects.

Appreciate the feedback.
