I found the format file I was looking for – I copied it into the equivalent cc2014 folder. It comes in as an OBJ for Trapcode form only.
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe After Effects CC\Support Files\Plug-ins\Format\Trapcode\TrapcodeOBJ.AEX. Now all works as expected.
I had previously tried uninstalling and reinstalling the trapcode suite – but I guess it doesn’t install properly.
I tried using c4d layer as an .obj source in FORM, but didn’t have any luck. But, it was just quick try – so I am probably missing something.
I hoping as that 3d objects in AfterFX matures, 3rd party developers will agree on .obj export defaults or some other format standard.

Acknowledged. What I meant or thought was that you could use the C4D capability IN AE and import an OBJ directly. I do not even own C4D and have never fiddled with the options in AE. I'm sort of gathering that the C4D capability in AE
is only useful if you have the C4D application. Is that right?

Yes, that is why I said this in my previous response:
" Of course, you can import a .obj file into Cinema 4D and then import the .c4d file into After Effects CC and later."
